Macaws

All About Scarlet Macaws

Science and Personalities

Scarlet macaws are native to Central and South America and live in humid areas, especially in the Amazon! Scarlets will grow to about 32 inches long and weigh 2 to 3 pounds, and their bright wings will reach a span of around 3 feet. In the wild, these macaws fly long distances for food in pairs or small groups! Scarlets are energetic, sassy, and spunky birds known to be more nippy and hormonal than other varieties. These macaws are also known for becoming one-person birds due to being idiosyncratic. Scarlet Macaws can also be spooked easily and are very flighty birds. These birds are large, so they will need a ton of cage space and out-of-cage space, as well as large perches and toys to keep them engaged and keep up with their high energy

Extra Facts & Health

Scarlets are primarily red with yellow and blue edging on their wings, with blue on the ends of their wings. This species will look the same between males and females. Regarding health, these macaws are prone to proventricular dilation disease, psittacosis, and psittacine beak and feather disease (viral infection).

All About Green Winged Macaws

Science and Personalities

The green-wing macaw is native to Central and South America in Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guyana, Brazil, Peru, Suriname, French Guiana, Paraguay, Argentina, and Bolivia. These birds will grow to around 40 inches with a wing span of 4 feet, which weighs them in at about 4 pounds. Like other large birds, green-wings will live around 50 years but can live into their 80's! These macaws are brilliant and can have an easygoing temperament, but they will need lots of handling. These birds are a more sensitive species, making them more challenging to train as they may want to take things personally or give up on the training. This macaw is more beaky and handsy, which may be a lot, but they are also more affectionate. Speaking will be limited to about 15 words as they aren't the biggest talkers, but they can make plenty of noise. In the wild, these birds live in flocks of around 6 to 8 and need plenty of socialization. They are typically more stubborn but can also be mellow and sensitive.

Extra Facts & Health

Green wings have red tops to their wings with greens and blues running down the wings and flight feathers. The feet are grey while the beak is tan colored and the mandible is dark. This species will look the same between male and female. As far as health, green wings, like most macaws, are prone to proventricular dilation disease, psittacosis, and psittacine beak and feather disease (viral infection).

All About Hahn's Macaws

Science and Personalities

The Hahns Macaw is native to Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela and seems to live in small flocks! These birds are known as mini macaws and will only grow around 12 inches while weighing five ounces in their lifespan of 20 to 30 years. The body of this bird may be small, but they certainly can make up for its personality! These birds are intelligent and charming and will provide their owners with a new level of fun. Hanhs will vocalize loudly and relatively frequently and can become great talkers! These little guys are outgoing and rambunctious and will never leave you bored, as they are big on playtime and exercise. These Macaws also love to climb and will use their what seems like "oversized feet" to help them along.

Extra Facts & Health

Hahn macaws are mostly bright green with a darker green-blue cap of feathers on their foreheads. They also have red on the underside of their wings! These Macaws are prone to feather plucking, overgrown beaks, nutritional disorders, proventricular dilatation disease, and psittacosis like most of their macaw relatives.

All About Catalina Macaws

Science and Personalities

The Catalina Macaw is a species mainly found in captivity and not in the wild, as this species is a blue and gold macaw mixed with a scarlet. These Macaws will grow up to 35 inches and weigh 2 to 3 pounds in their lifespan of 50 to 60 years. The variety of genes in this macaw allowed even more hybrids, such as the Camelot Macaw! Since this bird is a hybrid, so is its personality and temperament, meaning you get the outgoing and rambunctious side and the cranky and demanding side. These macaws can be very loud and may scream, using a vocabulary of around 15 words. These macaws are typically more neurotic and hormonal and love to fly in wide-open areas.

Extra Facts & Health

These Catalina macaws can come in all sorts of colors but typically its seen that they have a bright orange bellow, blue and green backs and multicolored heads. Males and females can look very similar due to different patterns unique to each bird so DNA testing is the best route. The health of this bird is similar to its ancestors with possible issues of Proventricular dilation, Psittacosis and bacterial infections.

All About Harlequin Macaws

Science and Personalities

Harlequin Macaws are only bred in captivity, where they will grow around 40 inches and weigh about 3 to 3 and a half pounds. The harlequin is produced from a combination of a green wing macaw and a blue and gold macaw, giving them a challenging set of genes due to the size difference of its parent macaws. These birds struggle with flight and brain function and can be more difficult to handle. However, these birds' temperament is more easygoing, mellow, and affectionate. The harlequin is often mixed up with the Catalina macaw as their appearance may look similar at first glance, but the harlequin is not as bright in color and has darker areas, such as a more red belly. However, the harlequin is often crossed with other hybrids to create even more hybrids.

Extra Facts & Health

Males and females can look very similar due to different patterns unique to each bird so DNA testing is the best route. The health of this bird is similar to its ancestors with possible issues of Proventricular dilation, Psittacosis and bacterial infections, but there may be other health issues caused by the sets of genes they contain.

All About Hyacinth & Lears Macaws

Science and Personalities

The Lears and Hyacinth Macaw are very large and similar in color. Both Macaws are native to areas of South America; however, the hyacinth will grow around 40 inches, being the largest macaw, while a Lears will produce approximately 25 inches. The weight of a hyacinth gets to about 3 to 4 pounds and will live around 60 years, while a Lears will get about 33 ounces and will also live 60 years. These birds are relatively gentle, can be trained with positive reinforcement, and are both skillful and social. Hyacinths are considered "gentle giants" and are overall pretty sweet and kind birds compared to others (not to mention they always look like they are smiling!). Both birds can vocalize loudly, but the Lears macaw is weaker and more high-pitched than a hyacinth call. These animals can be a handful, so you have plenty of time and space to care for them. Plus, their prices range pretty high as well. The hyacinth has a particularly large wingspan, so flight space is crucial for these birds.

Extra Facts & Health

Hyacinths and Lears Macaws have a slightly different appearance as the hyacinth is more of a deep dark blue with yellow in a band around the beak, while Lears are a lighter, blueish-green with more yellow around the mouth. Both males and females will look the same in both species as well. These species may experience similar health issues to the rest of their macaw family, such as Proventricular dilation, Psittacosis, and Papillomas.

All About Military Macaws

Science and Personalities

Military Macaws are native to Central and South America and grow around 30 inches, weighing in at about 2 pounds in their lifespan of 50 years. These macaws are pretty even-tempered, and even though they aren't super affectionate, they can become very bonded with their owners. If these birds lack training or handling, they may resort to being nippy and becoming cranky. Militaries are not as good at talking but can learn a few words and will learn tricks as well! These birds love to explore and need room to play and stretch, so large enclosures are necessary. But, these birds are more likely to be cage-aggressive and very protective of their space, so beware of their body language while using a cage.

Extra Facts & Health

Military Macaws are covered in shades of green, with blue edging and a bright red patch of plumage on their heads. Both males and females share this appearance, and DNA testing will be the best route. These macaws experience the same basic health issues as macaws, such as Proventricular dilatation disease or plucking.

All About Blue & Gold Macaws

Science and Personalities

Blue and Gold Macaws are native to areas in Panama through South America. These macaws will grow to be around 33 inches and weigh about 2 pounds in their nearly 60 years, but in some cases, they have lived to be 100 years old! These birds can be super sweet, friendly, and brilliant creatures, and they love to learn tricks. Blues are very capable of loud and ear-piercing noises but are excellent talkers! These birds will love to play and interact with people, so lots of play space and socialization are crucial for a happy pet. These macaws are also guilty of chewing furniture, jewelry, and wires, so keep them in a safe space and provide plenty of toys.

Extra Facts & Health

Blue and Gold macaws have a spot of green on their forehead, and the bellies and undersides of their wings are the standard yellowy-gold, while the rest of the body is primarily bright, vibrant blue. Males and females will look identical, so they have no physical differences. Like the macaw family, these animals are prone to proventricular dilatation disease and plucking.
